Your Decision
Opening up the Category Creation Interface
Login to your Administrator account, you should be viewing the dashboard by default once you've logged in successfully.
Look towards the left-hand sidebar and hover over Products and then choose the option Categories. Once loaded, you'll now be on the Category Creation interface.
Name
Choose a name for your category. Categories are used to separate each product into its own section making it much easier for customers to see which categories and the products within these categories that are available. A couple of examples for the category Name could be Cards, Coasters, Calendars, Costal, Animals etc.
Slug
The Slug is very simple, take the previously used Category Name that you've chosen for the Name input field and copy it into the Slug field. Then readjust the Name so that it's not capitalised, and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens when choosing to have two words for your category name.
Parent category
The Parent Category dropdown allows you to specify which parent category this current category applies to. If the current category in question is a Parent Category, then choose None. This would happen if you had Cushions, Cards, Coasters, Calenders, and so on - the highest level possible.
If you're a Greeting Card client, you'd add in your Ranges & Occasions elsewhere within the system, please visit the guides that assist you with these areas.
Description
The Category Description allows in some cases to show the text on the front end, in most cases we find alternative ways to include useful text to the Shop which better suits our methods of building. Though if you find it useful you can use it to add in some basic text that does describe that category as seen here.
Display type
It's not recommended to alter this option as we'll build your Shop around the best optimal settings.
Thumbnail
The Thumbnail is highly recommended to be added to each category that you create. The Thumbnail is shown on the frontend of the website to the user when they're browsing each category. You can always come back and add them afterward.
If you're unsure about the sizes and format, I recommend that you view our full article regarding images found here.
